Brief History of the Firm

In 1892, Herman Moller (a British subject) commenced to practise as a Chartered Accountant in Manchester. In 1913 Mr. Moller was joined in partnership by Mr. Snape. The firm changed its name to Moller Snape & Co., and in 1915 it became Mellor Snape & Co. Between the wars the firm expanded steadily with offices being opened in Macclesfield and Crewe. Expansion continued after the second world war with further offices in Buxton and Oldham. In 1972 we absorbed into our Manchester office the North West work of Josolyne Layton-Bennett & Co., a leading firm of Chartered Accountants in the city of London. A closer working relationship developed and at the beginning of 1976 we changed our name to Josolyne Layton-Bennett & Co. It soon became apparent that there was a need for full national and international coverage in order to service the very large organisations for which some of the offices acted. Accordingly in 1981 the London firm together with our Manchester, Oldham and Crewe offices merged with one of the large international firms. At Macclesfield and Buxton our clients included many private and family companies, individuals and partnerships all of whom require a personal and varied service. We therefore decided to retain our independence. However, we have an arrangement for our people to attend technical training courses, to receive technical manuals and bulletins and to consult with the technical departments of another national firm more in tune with our type of client. We also took the opportunity to shorten our name to Josolyne & Co. In 1989 our Buxton Office was taken over as a separate practice under a different name and since then Josolyne & Co has carried on its practice solely from Macclesfield. We feel that through these arrangements we have the best of both worlds, namely, a high standard of technical service geared to the needs of our types of client which are serviced by our 3 partners and 45 team members.
